Why Organic Popcorn?

Every 479 Popcorn product is USDA certified organic. That means that all of our popcorn flavors are 99-100% organic.

Here's why that matters:

1. It tastes better.
We believe that popcorn should deliver a corny, nutty flavor that fills your mouth. For the past 30 years, conventional GMO popcorn has been bred to pop large kernels that fill containers faster and thereby increase profits. Popcorn's prized corny taste, has been intentionally bred out of conventional popcorn because it conflicts with the flavor of artificial additives flavorings (such as "butter flavoring agents" containing diacetyl) and because it's tough to grow big, high-yielding crops that are also tasty.

We use heirloom organic popcorn, which has a distinctly corny, nutty taste, and an enticing toasty aroma. Our popcorn which comes from a small family-owned farm in operation since 1945, way before organic became a "trend". They employ strict sustainable farming practices that are heavily reliant on rotations and natural compost.

2. It's better for you.

• Conventional, non-organic popcorn was identified as one of the top ten foods most contaminated with pesticides and chemicals in the FDA's 2003 Total Diet Study.
• 33 toxic residues (such as chlordane, dieldrin and toxaphene) were found in non-organic popcorn, including persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that have been linked to serious health consequences, cancer, reproductive disorders, birth defects, lower IQ in children, and the decline of bird and aquatic species.
• The Popcorn Board's 2005 Agri Chemical Handbook lists 24 insecticides, 38 herbicides, 5 fumigants, 15 fungicides, and 4 'miscellaneous' chemicals that are approved for use in nonorganic popcorn.
• These chemicals and others, referred to as POPs, have been found to have serious health implications even when exposure in extraordinarily low levels, because many chemicals mimic human and animal hormones and are capable of crossing the placenta during pregnancy.
• POPs not only effect humans, but have also been linked to the declining bird population and other animal diseases.
